Luftwaffe – 6./JG 27 Yellow 2, Franz Stigler, Bremen (Germany), December 1943

This model was completed for the "Aircraft of the Aces" display at the Museum of Flight. It was shown as a hanger (strewn from the ceiling with fishing wire) in an aerial scene alongside a B-17F. The story represented was that - on December 20, 1943 - Luftwaffe ace Franz Stigler intercepted a crippled B-17F, and instead of shooting it down he escorted it over German occupied territory to land safely in England. The pilots of the two aircrafts eventually became friends after the war ended.

Notes

Propeller radius (in scale): 31.3mm

The Tamiya kit is marvelous, and I had to do just a couple of updates: the landing gear can only be assembled as deployed, so I had to scratch build the cover panels, and then I used a ProBlur aftermarket to represent the propeller in full motion. Painting was easy, I used some white marbling all over the black primer to add some tonal interest.
